The Story of the Piece
Circa 1900
Originally crafted as a stick pin, this petite 14K gold pendant features a sculptural winged creature surrounding a bezel-set natural blue sapphire. The figure has a feline-like head, curled tail, and wing, giving it the appearance of a heraldic winged lion or griffin.
The exact creature is difficult to identify, but the design draws from the mythological and heraldic tradition of winged animals in jewelry. The round blue sapphire is set at the center of the figure, adding a small point of color against the warm yellow gold.
The piece has been newly converted into a pendant with a fixed bail. Its small size and unusual motif make it a unique piece for someone who likes their jewelry with a little more personality.
