The Story of the Piece
Victorian, c. 1880s–1890s
A charming Victorian pendant in sterling silver, shaped with intricate scroll and ribbon-like details. Four antique cut diamonds sit at the center in cut-down collet settings, two old mine-cut and two rose-cuts surrounded by eighteen smaller rose-cut diamonds that follow the curves of the pendant and catch the light beautifully.
The cut-down collet setting has roots in Georgian jewelry, where diamonds were often framed by a thin metal rim to enhance their presence. Victorian jewelers revisited this earlier style, creating a Georgian Revival look that can be seen throughout the period and is once again finding its way into contemporary jewelry. The hand-cut diamonds add another layer of character, with the subtle variations of each stone revealing the hand of the cutter and craftsman. It is a wonderful little piece of jewelry history, and a design that feels just as relevant today.
